Technical Specifications of our SiC Cooling Plates

High demands are placed on slideways, tables and similar structural elements, because their quality essentially determines the value of the entire machine. In addition to the type of iron and any alloying metals, the foundry is therefore often specified the hardness values that must be achieved, or at which points of the casting the microstructure should be densified through accelerated cooling.

The use of cast iron cooling plates ("chills") is well known for this purpose, but their drawbacks are equally well known: strong chilling effect at the surface, stress cracks, an extremely hard, usually white edge zone, unfavourable microstructure formation, risk of fusing on (unless coated with a mould wash), risk of blow holes due to surface oxidation, the need for rapid pouring after placing the chill, and only a short service life.

By contrast, the ceramic SiC Cooling Plates offer clear advantages for foundry technology:

  • Soft, easily machinable edge zone, resulting in higher tool cutting speed and longer tool life
  • Uniform hardness throughout the entire depth of effect and favourable microstructure exactly where it is needed – namely beneath the machined surface
  • No risk of fusing on or blow holes
  • Unlimited standing time in the mould prior to pouring
  • Avoidance of surface stresses
  • Reusable multiple times, even without mould wash coating
